Purpose of This Guide
This document has been prepared to ensure your experience with the Crossing the Chasm simulation is smooth, uninterrupted, and productive. It covers essential technical prerequisites, login instructions, proactive troubleshooting measures, and additional support details.
1. Preparation and System Requirements
Before accessing the simulation, it is strongly recommended that you verify your environment for compatibility. Many technical issues arise not from the simulation itself, but from local device configurations, unsupported browsers, or connectivity limitations.
Required System Environment
- Device: Use a laptop or desktop computer (tablets and mobile phones are not supported).
- Operating System: Updated version of Windows or macOS.
- Browser: Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox, updated to the latest version. Other browsers may not perform reliably.
- Internet Connection: A stable internet connection of at least 5 Mbps. Wired (Ethernet) connection is ideal for reliability.
- VPN/Firewall: If using a corporate network, ensure the simulation URL is whitelisted. VPNs or strict firewalls can block key components of the simulation.
System Compatibility Check
You must complete a compatibility check using the official tool before logging in:
Compatibility Tool: https://forio.com/hbp-support/#check/simulations/chasm
Completing this step will confirm whether your device and environment meet the required standards.
2. Logging into the Simulation
Once your system setup has been verified, follow the steps below to log into the simulation.
Access Instructions
- Open Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, or Microsoft Edge (Safari is not supported).
- Visit the simulation platform at:
https://forio.com/app/harvard/crossing-the-chasm - Enter your assigned username and password. These are case-sensitive and must be typed exactly as provided.
- If login fails, open the site in a private/incognito window and try again. This clears cached login credentials that may interfere with access.
If access continues to fail after following these steps, contact your facilitator or coordinator. The support team may impersonate your login, verify credentials, or re-upload your user account as needed. Please write to LearnerSupport@harvardbusiness.org in such a scenario.
3. During the Simulation: Navigating Technical Disruptions
The simulation environment is designed for real-time decision-making and requires continuous, stable interaction. The following are common issues that participants may encounter, along with effective resolution strategies.
A. Simulation Freezes or Stops Responding
This typically results from browser memory overload or connectivity issues. If the simulation does not advance or seems stuck:
- Refresh the browser page.
- Log out, close the browser, and restart it before logging back in.
- Switch to an alternate browser (preferably between Chrome and Firefox).
- Reboot your device to reset memory usage and active processes.
- If using Wi-Fi, switch to a wired connection or mobile hotspot.
B. Noticeable Lag or Performance Delays
Lag often indicates that your device is low on available memory or your network is experiencing latency.
To address this:
- Close all unnecessary browser tabs and background programs.
- Disconnect other devices from your Wi-Fi network, if possible.
- If using a corporate VPN, disconnect or use a home network if permitted.
- Switch to a wired connection for optimal stability.
C. Repeated Disconnections
Persistent disconnection is often due to either network instability or browser configuration. In such cases:
- Avoid switching between tabs or applications during the simulation.
- Ensure your system does not go into sleep mode.
- Re-run the system compatibility check.
- Document the time and nature of disconnections for reporting purposes.
4. Making Decisions in the Simulation
The simulation is intentionally structured to mimic real-world ambiguity and market complexity. It is expected that you will make strategic decisions using the information provided within the simulation interface.
Facilitators will not guide decision-making in real-time. This allows for a richer debrief session and encourages the development of independent strategic thinking.
Decision-Making Approach
- Base your choices on available customer feedback, data sets, and market responses within the simulation.
- Track your own reasoning, even if uncertain—this is useful for the debrief session.
- Understand that the learning comes not just from the outcome but from how you reason through uncertainty.
All decisions will be reviewed during the debrief, providing an opportunity to reflect on outcomes and share your perspective with peers.
5. Connecting to the Live Session (Zoom / Teams / WebEx)
Your program may include a live debrief or instructional session conducted via video conferencing. Ensure that your access details have been received in advance and tested.
If you experience issues joining:
- Confirm the date and time (including time zone).
- Test your camera and audio settings before the session begins.
- Attempt to join from a different browser or device if the link does not open.
If problems persist, contact the live event support team immediately.

This team monitors the mailbox during scheduled events and can assist in real-time.
6. Post-Simulation Adjustments and Reflections
Participants often ask whether they can change a previously submitted response. The simulation environment does not typically allow for reversing or editing choices once submitted. This replicates the constraints of real-world decision-making.
However:
- You are encouraged to make notes about what you would do differently.
- These insights can be shared during the debrief and may be valuable for discussion.
7. Future Access, Resources, and Ongoing Support
After your simulation session:
- You may be provided with a read-only summary of your performance or a dashboard view for reference.
- If applicable, your facilitator will share a recording of the debrief or a summary of key insights.
- For future simulation engagements, save this guide for reference—it applies to most Harvard Business simulations hosted on Forio.
